Worth the trip to Limon alone -- the Aerial Tram ride at Rain Forest, a 1,000-acre nature reserve next to the Braulio Carrillo National Park. This is one of two such centers run by a private foundation (the other is of a smaller scale and nearer the Pacific Coast). These are well spaced out and travel silently at just over one mile per hour so you can soak up the atmosphere and the unique experience of being up among the treetops of a rain forest.
Packing for Limon Costa Rica
The closest beach available would be Playa Bonita which is about a 15 to 20 minute drive from the port. If you want you can take a taxi to Playa Bonita for 10 US dollar per person. Most of them (Puntarenas and Puerto Caldera) are located on the Pacific / southern side of the country.
Where You're Docked?
One thing we have noticed though is that usually when it rains, it at least often rains at night. This area can be somewhat unsafe at night so please don’t walk around alone. It is best to drive or use a registered taxi while in downtown Limon. The ride will take you about two and a half hours and will cost about $12 per person for one way. Puerto Limon, Costa Rica Cruise Port
The port often doesn’t hand out any tourist maps or other sort of information although you will find there are lost of locals around which are more than happy to help you find your way. Cruise ships visiting Puerto Limon in Costa are able to dock in this port of call. Limon’s port offers a separate pier for cruise ships and is fully equipped with a cruise terminal, taxi stand and souvenir market. The rest of the port is all dedicated to the export of Costa Rican products which is mainly coffee from the central valley. Puerto Limon is not the main reason cruise ships visit this port. It is simply the gateway to Costa Rica from the Caribbean side.
This beach can be reached by taxi if you plan to visit on your own and spend as much time as you would like. The country is full of volcanic mountains, lush valleys, and virgin tropical rainforests supporting a diverse mixture of plant and animal life. Costa Rica has preserved almost one-quarter of its land area as national parks or preserves. Some of the exciting shore excursion options revolve around these national parks or the Costa Rican countryside.
Explore Cahuita National Park
Limón offers a large central market that includes several different vendors, both food and other goods. This is a great choice for a few hours tour that includes pick up and drop off at Port Limón. Personally, it is one of my absolute favorite things to do in Limon. Check out this tour for an all-day whitewater rafting adventure priced at $132 USD. You will travel over 18 miles of river, and transportation from Limón is included in the package. This tour will provide transportation both ways to and from Port Limón.
Whitewater rafting down Pacuare River is a must-do for adventure seekers. This river is located about 60 minutes north of Limón and is accessible by taxi or through a guided tour. If you travel further south to Puerto Viejo, you can take a snorkeling tour out to see a shipwreck sight.

This is when food vendors are there, and you are more likely to see sloths hanging in the trees. You’ll find red taxis right outside the pier that can whisk you away to nearby beaches or other top sites near the Puerto Limon cruise port. Shore excursions are another convenient way to get around the region since the buses will meet you right outside the cruise port. It also includes a guide that will be able to point out the amazing animals that live along the riverfront. Tours start at only $107 USD and start running early in the morning until late. The park was set up in 1971 to protect the rare wildlife here which includes the Green Turtle and the best way to travel these canals is to take an open-air boat tour.
The cruise terminal has a welcome center and souvenir market. Until 2018, as a cruise shore excursion option from Puerto Limon were offered guided bus tours to the capital city of San Jose (road distance is ~160 km / 100 mi). However, due to the bad roads, traffic and mountains, it takes minimum 4 hours to drive (each way) between Puerto Limon and San Jose. This requires the ships to stay in Puerto Limon much longer than usual (~12 hours), so San Jose is usually visited from Puntarenas.
The island doesn’t have much in terms of tourist facilities, but you might even see some local surfers catching the waves. Isla Uvita also has a place in history since it is where Christopher Columbus landed on his last journey across the Atlantic to the Americas. Costa Rica is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Central America, and Puerto Limon is the most important Costa Rican port in the Caribbean.
Cahuita National Park is located about an hour from the city of Limón. We like this tour a lot because you can see a ton of wildlife in a short amount of time and the park is just amazing. If you’re planning to walk to the city center, it’s only about 250 yards from the cruise terminal. A helpful map of the city is located right before you leave the port and has recommended walks on it as well. The Tortuguero Canals, which were turned into a national park in 1975, were named after the local green turtle (called Tortuguero) which uses the canals to spawn.
If there was ever a country created for eco-tourism, it is Costa Rica. Effectively a biological corridor between North and South America and with its neo-tropical climate and rainforests acting as a sort of biosphere, it now has one of the greatest biological diversities in the world. Doesn't that sound like a great port to include on your next cruise itinerary to Costa Rica. Nearly a quarter of its landmass is designated as national parks and it houses 8,000 species of plants, 859 species of birds, 10% of the world's butterflies and as many snakes as you could shake a stick at. Like any port in the Caribbean you will find that the Puerto Limon cruise port is filled with souvenir shops in abundance.
Puerto Limon-Moin port (locode CRLIO) has two cargo terminals (named "Moín" and "Limon"), which handle Costa Rica's shipping exports and imports (bulk and containership cargoes), as well as docking of cruise vessels. Limon is home to several outdoor attractions, including nature thrills like river rafting and zip-lining. From here you get to explore its wonderful capital city San Jose, visit the beautiful coffee plantations and enjoy its immens and diverse ecological wonders in the rain forest.
